Books on Break
School success depends on summer
Books on Break combats summer learning loss and transforms summer into a time of literacy enrichment.
At “free book fairs” just before the start of summer, elementary students in local schools are invited to select free books to take home over the summer and keep forever. These books help them retain their academic skills and return to school in the fall ready to learn.
In summer 2019, 16,978 students selected 86,495 books during Books on Break in Durham Public Schools, Chapel-Hill Carrboro City Schools, Orange County Schools and — new in 2019 — in Bladen and Columbus counties!
