Mirrors and Windows

Book Harvest is passionate about promoting books featuring diverse characters. Books can serve as both mirrors and windows – if all children see themselves in the pages of their books.

Thus, we are launching a new initiative, the Mirrors and Windows Project. We will release a list each fall of books that feature diverse characters. Click here to see the press release for the launch of this initiative.mwflyleaf

We are delighted that our friends at Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill and at Regulator Bookshop and Letters Bookshop in Durham have special displays featuring books from the 2016 Mirrors and Windows List. Please consider visiting these fine stores and buying books from this list, either for your family, as gifts, or to donate to Book Harvest’s children. Thank you!

We thank Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop for coining the phrase “Windows, Mirrors and Sliding Glass Doors.” Learn more about her important work at https://www.psdschools.org/webfm/8559.  And a very special thanks to Book Harvest Authors’ Circle member Kelly Starling Lyons and Book Harvest volunteer extraordinaire Lori Nofziger for their guidance in selecting books for this list!
